Do we have enough Swimming Pools?
Yesterday at the Jordan School Board Meeting, I raised an issue that I believe we need to address in the Jordan School District.
Recently, I have had the opportunity to attend some events with the swimming community. It included meetings and practices at our facilities. I am concerned with the current condition of our swimming programs in the Jordan School District.
The Jordan School District has five high schools, soon to be six, that will be sharing two swimming facilities. 53,000 students and a community population of 250,000 residence sharing a pool.
I attended a practice recently for one of the teams, only to see that the lanes were shared with another team at the same time. Imagine how hard it would be to work with your team as your competitor is swimming next to you.
It is sad to me when I observe a high school like West Jordan High, who won the 2005 State Championship in swimming. After we closed the pool at West Jordan Middle School, the swimming program has fallen apart. Now they have less than 10 swimmers in their program. They rent the facility in Kearns for our West Jordan Program.
Our schools, our students, and our community suffer from our lack of vision in this area. I have asked our facilities and finance committees to take a look at this and asked that this be on the agenda in a future board meeting. I would love to hear what you think about the Swimming Programs in the Jordan School District.
